Case Studies
Here are some actual examples of the services Buyequip has performed:
Ipswich Transfer Station
Since April 2009, Buyequip has undertaken e-waste recycling for the Ipswich City Council and by March 31 2011, has recycled 244,331 kg of material for them at its processing facility, 2.5 km outside of the Brisbane CBD.
Buyequip recovers over 98% of materials through manual disassembly, which has been demonstrated to be more efficient at recovering materials than automated shredding and sorting systems. Plastics are separated, sorted and crushed with Buyequip machinery, metals are separated into copper, steel, aluminium, etc, and the processed commodities are then sent to specialist commodity recyclers.
80% of the waste collected comprises televisions which are problematic and expensive to recycle due to heavy leaded glass tubes. Buyequip has recycled almost 10,000 televisions since April 2009 and the tubes are sent to Adelaide for processing and then sent to be remanufactured into new CRTs. This process is expensive; however, Buyequip is committed to achieving the best possible environmental outcomes for e-waste for their clients and the community.
Why a small law firm chose Buyequip for their eWaste
A small Brisbane law firm weighed up their disposal options and opted for the collection of their eWaste by Buyequip. The firm had 20 pieces of electronic assets that were End-Of-Life - not working and obsolete - and needed to be recycled.
The client had 6 computers, 2 laptops, 4 LCDS, 1 server, 4 printers, 1 box of computer peripherals, 1 VCR and 1 Old phone.
| # items | Company/ method of disposal | Costs | Recycled | Collection service |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | Buyequip | $89 | YES | YES |
| 20 | Waste company | Up to $200 | NO | YES |
| 20 | Local transfer station | Up to 3 hours staff time | Sometimes | NO |
Within 24 hours of the firms call, Buyequip performed the collection and ensured all items were properly recycled.
A 2000 seat computer refresh
Throughout 2010, Buyequip handled the logistics, asset reporting, asset detag, data destruction and remarketing for a 2000 seat refresh by a Queensland based company. Buyequip was able ensure that the organisations data was securely erased, the best possible financial return was achieved, and all End-of-Life equipment was properly recycled.
All in two days work - Melbourne
In 2010, Buyequip performed the onsite data cleansing and removal of End-of-Life IT equipment from a Melbourne based education institution. The hard drives of more than 200 PCs were securely cleansed. The PCs and a similar number of CRT monitors were then moved to the basement of the building where they were securely wrapped for transport and collection. All complete within a two day deadline!
Buyequip value entire IT platforms!
Buyequip have valued the IT platforms for many national companies. Whether you are setting forecast budgets or require an appraisal for insurance purposes, we can value your IT platform from 5 PCs to an entire infrastructure.
Fighting poverty through education
The School of St Jude is an independent sponsorship-supported school that provides education for Tanzanian children from the lowest socio-economic backgrounds. The School of St Jude in Tanzania purchased several hundred computers and monitors from Buyequip which are used to help the school fulfill its philosophy of "Fighting Poverty through Education".
8.5 tonnes of eWaste diverted from land fill
Buyequip diverted a massive 8.5 tonnes of harmful eWaste from landfill at our eWaste Recyclathon held at Milton in March 2010. With the help of sponsorship from Westpac and the Brisbane City Council, in excess of 100 organisations and individuals converged on Milton Park with cars, utes and trucks laden with eWaste to take advantage of this free drop off day.
